East End Hospice- A Volunteer’s Reflection- Susan Capurso
A Decade of Love: My Journey as a Hospice Volunteer
For nearly ten years, I’ve had the profound privilege of serving as a hospice volunteer with East End Hospice. This experience has been nothing short of transformative, touching the very core of what it means to be human. Today, I want to share my story in the hope that it might inspire others to embark on this incredibly rewarding journey of compassion and service.
The Honor of Being Present
Hospice volunteering is a unique calling. It’s an opportunity to step into the lives of families during their most challenging moments – the final chapter of a loved one’s life. The emotions that surge through these families are often overwhelming and heart-wrenching. Yet, in these moments of intense vulnerability, we as volunteers are granted the honor of being present.
Sometimes, our role is simply to lend a consoling ear or offer a shoulder to lean on. Other times, we provide much-needed respite, allowing family members to run errands or take a brief break, secure in the knowledge that their loved one is in caring hands. Each visit, each interaction, is a chance to make a difference, no matter how small it may seem.
Lessons from a Centenarian
Of all the patients I’ve had the privilege to serve, one stands out in particular – a remarkable 104-year-old woman who left an indelible mark on my heart. Her radiant smile and the twinkle in her eye served as a poignant reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing every moment we’re given.
Together, we’d watch classic movies, and she’d hum along to every show tune, her joy infectious. Even when she couldn’t remember my name, her enthusiasm never waned. “Do I know you? Oh!!! Susan! That is such a beautiful name, thank you for visiting me!” she’d exclaim, her words warming my heart each time.
This incredible woman taught me a valuable lesson about the person I aspire to be. Regardless of age – be it 80, 90, or 104 – I want to embrace life with a smile, appreciate my loved ones, and express gratitude to those who care for me. Her impact on me will resonate for a lifetime, a gift I’m honored to share with others.
The Path to Volunteering
My journey with East End Hospice began with a personal connection – a dear neighbor and friend of 20 years who passed away at 99. Our friendship was marked by simple joys: ensuring she always had fresh flowers and spending time watching her favorite show, WWF Wrestling. When her family chose East End Hospice for her final days, I witnessed something extraordinary in those brief two days that transformed my perspective entirely.
The compassion, dignity, and care provided by East End Hospice inspired me to become part of this beautiful organization. The decision was instantaneous, and after completing their comprehensive training program, I never looked back.
Growth and Gratitude
Volunteering with East End Hospice has been a journey of continuous growth. The annual educational updates have not only enhanced my ability to serve as a volunteer but have also provided valuable insights that I’ve been able to apply in my professional life.
To East End Hospice, I extend my deepest gratitude. You’ve given me an experience that will resonate with me for the rest of my days. The opportunity to serve, to connect, and to make a difference in the lives of others during their most vulnerable moments is a gift beyond measure.
